Com 83,15 KM2 e um total de 340 habitantes (2021), esta freguesia constituiu o Concelho de Águias até 1834, tendo passado no final do século XVIII para a atual povoação de Brotas. O seu orago é Nossa Senhora das Brotas, culto que data do século XV. segundo a tradição este culto teve origem na vila das Águias, mais propriamente no lugar de Brotas da Barroca, que se encontrava naquela altura completamente inabitável por ser extremamente húmido e constituído por uma grande cova cercada de ribanceiras, que a toponímia local designou de Inferno, Inferninho e Purgatório. A lenda conta que enquanto um pastor guardava ali a sua vaca, esta por descuido escorregou e foi estatelar-se morta no fundo dessa cova. Quando se apercebeu do sucedido, o pastor, desprovido da sua principal fonte de rendimentos para sustentar a sua família, confiou à Virgem o seu desgosto, implorando-lhe proteção. De seguida começou a esfolar o animal e já depois de lhe ter cortado a pata que se tinha partido com a violência da queda, apareceu-lhe a Virgem Santíssima que lhe recomendou serenidade e pediu que fosse dizer aos moradores das Águias para lhe construírem ali uma capela e disse que assim que voltasse encontraria a vaca viva. O pastor assim fez e quando regressou ao local com os seus conterrâneos, a vaca já andava a pastar como se nada tivesse acontecido e da pata que lhe havia sido cortada apareceu feita uma imagem da virgem. Pouco antes de 1424 ali se ergueu a ermida, como simples comenda da Ordem Militar de São Bento de Avis e dependente da vila das Águias. E a imagem da Nossa Senhora de Brotas ali foi conservada, com cerca de um palmo e feita de osso, harmonizando-se perfeitamente com os dados da tradição. O declínio da vila das Águias começou a acontecer quando, a pouco e pouco, o lugar de Brotas, local onde se edificou a ermida, se tornou uma povoação mais importante devido às constantes peregrinações ao Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Brotas. O crescente desenvolvimento religioso levou a que em 1535 o cardeal- infante D. Afonso, bispo de Évora, lhe concedesse independência eclesiástica, transferindo a sede paroquial de Águias, já muitos decadente, para Brotas com o título de Nossa Senhora das Brotas. Em frente ao templo estende-se a Rua da Igreja, onde as casas ainda apresentam os letreiros das confrarias a que pertenciam, de Setúbal, de Mora, de Lavre, e Cabeção e de Cabrela. Esta é portanto a primeira parte da aldeia a que o povo chama de “Aldeia Velha”. A partir da primeira Guerra Mundial, os proprietários de uma herdade denominada Monte de Cima, fronteiro à “Aldeia Velha”. O Concelho das Águias ou Brotas foi extinto em 1834 e anexado ao de Mora.
