Aveiro is a Portuguese city, located in the Centro Region, a sub-region of the Aveiro Region, capital of the Aveiro district, with about 55,000 inhabitants.

It is the seat of a municipality with 78 450 inhabitants (2011) and an area of ??197.58 km², subdivided into 10 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Murtosa (either through the Ria de Aveiro or by land), in the northeast by Albergaria-a-Velha, in the east by Águeda, in the south by Oliveira do Bairro, in the southeast by Vagos and by Ílhavo (the boundaries with the latter municipality also being made by land and across the estuary), and with a relatively narrow strip of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, to the west, through the parish of São Jacinto. It is an important urban, port, railway, university and tourist center.
