The building is inserted in an essentially residential street, very quiet, with a wide network services and traditional trade nearby.

The parish of Misericórdia results from the aggregation of the old parishes of Encarnação, Mercês, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. The origin of the name of the parish is due to the presence of the headquarters of Santa Casa da Misericórdia in the Church and Professed House of São Roque, since 1768.

The territory now known as Misericórdia was, over the centuries, home to various religious institutions for the support of children, for the Christianisation of Moors and Jews and for the collection of penitent women. With the expulsion of the Jesuits, the houses of the Society of Jesus were donated to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia.

Also linked to agricultural production, the parish and its hills supplied the city in Muslim times, mainly through the production of olive trees, fruit and cereals. With the Discoveries, the neighbourhood grew northwards, acquiring a population more linked to maritime activities.

In the 19th century, the area continued to gather artists and intellectuals, who frequented its theatres and cafés. The press also settled in the area of the current parish, occupying vacant palaces. Newspapers like Diário de Notícias, Revolução de Lisboa, Mundo and Século livened up the nightlife of the neighbourhood, which became increasingly accessible with the new lifts at Glória, Bica and Estrela.

The popular neighbourhood of parties, festivals and marches coexists today with the most up-to-date urban culture, with new restaurants, bars and taverns, in Bairro Alto, by the river and in Cais do Sodré.

The Freguesia da Misericórdia, which is 1.11 km2 in size, has around 11,000 inhabitants.
